Findlane vs Algolia

Both are hosted search with typo tolerance, facets, synonyms, and rules. Algolia does more, from AI ranking to A/B tests, and bills every search request. Findlane is keyword search for online stores on a flat plan, with a bill that has a ceiling. Here's how they compare, and when each is the better choice.

The short answer.

Choose Algolia if you need

  • Semantic search, which Algolia calls NeuralSearch, on its Elevate plan.
  • AI re-ranking and personalization, from Grow Plus.
  • A visual editor and merchandising tools for your team, from Grow Plus.
  • A/B tests of search settings, on every plan.
  • An uptime guarantee in a contract: 99.99% on Elevate, with an annual contract.
  • To keep a front end built on InstantSearch, Algolia's open-source UI libraries.

Choose Findlane if you want

  • A bill you know before the month starts: flat plans, overage that never costs more than a larger plan, and a spending limit on from the start, which you can set from $0.
  • Every feature on every plan, including 1,000 rules per index, sorts that add no records, and 90 days of analytics.
  • Repeat searches answered by the edge cache, and searches from verified crawlers, left off the bill.
  • Your Algolia settings brought across by the importer, with notes on anything that changed.
  • Keyword search done well: typos, synonyms, facets, sorts, location, query suggestions, and “Did you mean”.

What your catalog would cost.

Set your catalog and traffic. Both bills use list prices, and each shows its arithmetic.

Findlane Team
$49
  • Team plan $49
Algolia Grow
$145
  • 290,000 requests over 10,000 × $0.50 per 1,000 = $145
Algolia Grow Plus
$507.50
  • 290,000 requests over 10,000 × $1.75 per 1,000 = $507.50

A month at list prices, in US dollars before tax.

Algolia Grow and Grow Plus include 10,000 search requests and 100,000 records a month, then charge $0.50 or $1.75 per 1,000 requests, and $0.40 per 1,000 records. Grow keeps each sort order as a standard replica, a full copy of the records; Grow Plus can use virtual replicas, which add none. Volume discounts need an annual contract.

Findlane is the plan's price, plus $0.20 per 1,000 extra searches and $1 per 10,000 extra records, each never more than a larger plan would cost, so the estimate shows the plan that costs least. Sorts add no records. Repeat searches answered from the edge cache aren't counted, which the estimate doesn't subtract.

What counts as a search.

Both count search as you type request by request. What's left off the bill differs.

Algolia counts each request, including

  • Every keystroke in search as you type.
  • Empty queries, and each filter, sort, or facet value a shopper picks.
  • Query Suggestions: an Autocomplete menu beside the results is two requests a keystroke.
  • Some widgets, such as refinementList, make two requests.

Findlane counts

  • Each search that reaches the search engine, as a shopper types or picks a filter.
  • Free: repeat searches the edge cache answers.
  • Free: query suggestions and “Did you mean”.
  • Free: verified crawlers such as Googlebot, refused searches, and AI agents' test searches.

Moving from Algolia.

Settings and records come across with tools; the front end is yours to change. Read the import guide.

1

Bring the settings

The importer reads an Algolia index's settings, replicas, synonyms, and rules in your browser, and shows what carried over before saving. Your Algolia key never reaches Findlane.

2

Copy the records

A short script reads your records through Algolia's browse API, which isn't billed as search requests, and stages them in Findlane. The index switches to them in one commit, while Algolia keeps serving your site.

3

Replace the search calls

The search API is different and there's no InstantSearch adapter, so the search box and results move to Findlane's browser SDK, React components, or script tag. This is the part that takes work.

Questions, answered.

Is Findlane a drop-in replacement for Algolia?

No. Settings come across with the importer and records with a short script, but the search API is different, so the search box and results on your site move to Findlane's SDK or React components.

Is Findlane always cheaper?

No. With a small catalog and light traffic, Grow can cost less: 20,000 records and 30,000 searches a month is $10 on Grow and $19 on Findlane's Starter. As traffic grows, Grow charges for every request, while Findlane stays on its plan, with overage that never costs more than a larger plan would.

Does Findlane have AI or semantic search?

No. It's keyword search with typo tolerance, synonyms, rules, and the ranking you set. It has no vector search, AI re-ranking, or personalization.

Can both run while we test?

Yes. Load your records into Findlane while Algolia keeps serving your site, compare results in the dashboard's playground, then switch your front end when you're ready.

Does Findlane offer an uptime guarantee?

Not today: plans don't come with a service-level agreement. Algolia offers one on Elevate, its plan with an annual contract.

Can you help with the move?

Yes. Write to hello@findlane.dev with your catalog size and how you search today, and we'll help you plan the switch.
